Exercise is also important if you have a chronic illness, such as diabetes, that's often accompanied by heart trouble. A follow-up to the Harvard study published in January 2001 found that the women in the group with diabetes who exercised at least four hours a week were 40 percent less likely to develop heart disease. Other studies have found similar trends for men. If you want to avoid heart disease -- or you're recovering from heart trouble -- a little sweat can work wonders.
